Don't set DNS TTL too high

Initially, set the DNS TTL low for testing. Once you verify everything is working, then increase the TTL to optimize performance. The issue is recursive resolvers will cache the entry. I updated my DNS records and they will not propagate until that TTL expires. So your clients will not connect to the correct server until that TTL expires and updates with the correct one. Facepalm, lesson learned…
